Photography with artificial intelligence: photos that make people say wow, without the shoot

In my book I wrote that photographs are the basic tool for communicating in luxury, and that they have to make people say “wow”. You need emotional photos. The problem, for an SME, was the cost. Today the problem has changed, and in the course we've given it a whole module.

In brief
  1. Photos have to make people dream. That wow starts the process that leads the customer to want the brand.
  2. They used to cost a shoot: photographer, location, models, logistics. Many SMEs stopped there.
  3. Today a technical sheet or a phone photo can give you images and videos consistent with a luxury positioning.
  4. What doesn't change: art direction. You decide the mood; the AI carries it out. Without a mood, it produces photos that are beautiful and all different.
  5. What you don't do: pass off homes that don't exist as real projects. The product has to match the story.

The wow

Photographs are the basic tool for communicating in the luxury sector and their aim is to make people dream. They are photos that make the customer looking at them say “wow”, and that wow sets off the processes in their head that lead them to want the brand. They go on the website, the blog, social media, emails. Our signature kitchen started circulating on social media a year before the Milan showroom opened and took off: the first sale was to a couple who came all the way from Novara after seeing that photo.

The old problem

For years a photo like that required a shoot: photographer, location, models, logistics, days of work, and even more for video. Long lead times and high costs that kept many Italian SMEs out of the high end because of their images, even when the product was up to it. The Italian product is nearly always good; the photos much less so.

What you can do today

With artificial intelligence, starting from a technical sheet, a phone photo or a description, you get hyper-realistic images ready for catalogues, the website and advertising. A kitchen drawing becomes a photo and a video to show the customer. A marine tap, from a technical sheet, becomes a styled image worthy of a high-end catalogue. A summer garment from an e-commerce site is placed in a Mediterranean setting with the right light. A beauty product photographed with a smartphone becomes a cover shot. And from the photos you get the videos, which is the format social media rewards.

The result is what I asked SMEs for in the book and what seemed out of reach: visual content consistent with a luxury positioning, in timescales and at costs a small company can sustain. In the course I gave it a module, Luxury Content by AI: the software chosen and tested, copy consistent with the positioning, product, artistic and people photos, videos, translation into every language you sell in. A content system that produces every week, even without you.

What doesn't change

Two things. The first is art direction. The difference, which nobody explains, between an SME that makes an excellent product and one that is a brand is a person who gives everything a style: the same finishes, the same atmosphere, the same light in every photo and every video. The AI carries out what you decide. Without a mood, it produces images that are beautiful and all different, and a brand whose photos are all different doesn't exist. You decide the mood first, as you did for the shoot.

The second is consistency with the product. I can't tell one story and deliver something else: if the photo promises a finish, that finish has to reach the customer's home. Generated images are there to set the scene, to show, to make people dream. Real projects, with customer testimonials, remain what generates the most trust, and those can't be invented. Anyone who confuses the two burns years of work in a single review.

What to do tomorrow

Take your best product, its technical sheet and the photo you have. Decide the mood, with one adjective and one reference, and ask for three images in the same style. Look at them with the eye of a customer scrolling on their phone: if you say wow, you have the first photo of your high end. If you don't, the problem lies in the mood you chose.
